Mt Cass Windfarm

Waipara, Canterbury

A proposal for the largest windfarm in New Zealand, located on 6km of ridgeline at Mt Cass, Waipara, Canterbury. The 93MW wind farm will have the potential to power 40,0000 homes and offset around 100,000 tonnes of greenhouse CO2 emissions per year.

GHLA were engaged to undertake an extensive landscape assessment dealing with issues of landscape impacts including assessment of amenity values and the proposal of mitigation and enhancement measures. Three sizes of turbine were assessed and simulated into 3D models from 6 viewpoints at different times of day.

GHLA assisted to successfully vary the RMA consent for larger, more technologically advanced turbines, the first of their kind in New Zealand.

As part of a mitigation strategy, significant landscape and ecological planning was undertaken in order to improve the habitat and bio-diversity of the surrounding area.
